UTLA Endorses Hendy-Newbill for LAUSD Board District 1

Sherlett Hendy-Newbill recently gained a key endorsement from United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA) for Los Angeles Unified School District Board District 1, adding to her backing by the L.A. Times, L.A. Sentinel and L.A. County Democratic Party.

As the race heats up for the Board Member Seat in LAUSD District 1, the Dorsey High School community is continuing to mobilize support for Sherlett Hendy-Newbill.  The election will take place this coming Tuesday, March 5. 

UTLA calls for LAUSD to close schools

“We are calling for the rapid, accelerated, and humane closure of LAUSD schools,” UTLA President Alex Caputo-Pearl said. “Other countries have shown that a proactive — not reactive — approach slows the spread of the virus, makes sure healthcare providers are not crushed with overwhelming demand, and dramatically reduces fatalities.”

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Tens of thousands of Los Angeles teachers returned to work Wednesday after voting to ratify a contract deal between their union and school officials, ending a six-day strike at the nation’s second-largest district. “Great! ‘On Strike For Our Students’: LAUSD Teachers Send Message To Beutner With Historic March  

More than 50,000 Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) teachers, parents, and United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA) members marched in front of the district’s headquarters on Monday, January 14 on day one of the strike, with their picket signs and bullhorns in hand in the rain, as they chanted, “Show me what democracy looks like, this is what democracy looks like!”
