The heart of downtown Los Angeles is set to host a groundbreaking performance on Friday, September 27, when internationally acclaimed bass-baritone Davóne Tines & THE TRUTH presents “OpenProcess – ROBESOИ” at Zipper Hall in the Colburn School. This unique concert, which begins at 8 p.m., promises to be a transformative fusion of classical Americana, electro-gospel, and personal storytelling, honoring the legacy of the legendary Paul Robeson.
Davóne Tines is no stranger to pushing boundaries. Heralded by The New York Times as one of the “most powerful voices of our time” and recognized as a 2019 Time magazine NEXT leader, Tines is known for his fearless exploration of race, identity, and social justice in his music. “OpenProcess – ROBESOИ,” created in collaboration with director Zack Winokur, represents Tines’ most personal project to date. The album and performance aim to unpack not only Robeson’s towering influence as a singer, actor, and activist but also the human vulnerability behind his monumental public persona.
The evening will offer audiences an “acid trip” through Robeson’s life, from the prestigious stages of Carnegie Hall to the quiet yet powerful reflections in a Moscow hotel room. Tines and his band THE TRUTH, featuring pianist John Bitoy and sound artist Khari Lucas, have crafted a musical landscape that melds classical, funk, gospel, John Adams, Shakespeare, and Bach, making this performance a kaleidoscopic tribute to Robeson’s artistic and political courage.

Paul Robeson is remembered as one of the most significant cultural figures of the 20th century. Known for his deep baritone voice and commanding presence, Robeson not only made waves as an artist but also as a political activist. His outspoken advocacy for civil rights, his opposition to colonialism, and his unwavering commitment to equality for marginalized communities earned him both reverence and persecution.
Tines’ rise to prominence as one of today’s most influential operatic voices is inextricably tied to his commitment to social justice. Recently, he made headlines once again after being awarded a Chanel Next Prize, a prestigious grant aimed at supporting boundary-pushing artists like Tines who are redefining what classical music and performance art can be.
