Sherlett Hendy-Newbill recently gained a key endorsement from United Teachers of Los Angeles (UTLA) for Los Angeles Unified School District Board District 1, adding to her backing by the L.A. Times, L.A. Sentinel and L.A. County Democratic Party.
UTLA, the is one of the most influential unions in the country. In the March Primary, UTLA had previously endorsed Khallid Al-Alim for Board District 1. Al-Alim quickly came under fire for posting and or liking material that was deemed to be anti-semitic, forcing the union to withdraw their endorsement.
Many UTLA members were outraged by his misrepresentation of the purpose and vision of UTLA after the union poured nearly $750,000 into his campaign. Other UTLA members were confused about how a non-educator gained the endorsement of the teachers union to begin with. Despite the perplexity at UTLA, Sherlett still finished first in the March primary despite being outspent 11 to 1.

“By finally officially endorsing Sherlett, UTLA has shown that ethics and integrity matter, and should be paramount,” said long-time UTLA member Emily Pineda.
“Nearly every reputable political organization endorses Sherlett, and the fact that the legendary Dr. George McKenna endorses her speaks volumes. Sherlett would be replacing Dr. Mc Kenna if she is elected. Dr. McKenna, has set a great standard and has advocated for urban students and urban communities for decades. He has been a great mentor to Sherlett and she is by far the best candidate to represent LAUSD Board District 1.”
Hendy-Newbill’s action items for District 1 include:
- Creating sustainable apprenticeship and job shadowing programs for students to obtain marketable skills in vocations such as Automotive Technology, Construction, Culinary Arts, Cosmetology, Audio Engineering and other Vocational fields
- Creating and maintaining safe and supportive school environments where schools are a safe place for students of all ethnic backgrounds, and gender identities.
- Continuing to nurture and develop the Black Student Achievement Plan which provides additional resources and support to improve the academic engagement and attendance of Black students.
- Making education a team effort by using the community school model: Wrap-Around support for students’ academic, social and emotional needs; Strong curriculum, high quality teaching, inclusive leadership, positive behavior practices, family and community partnerships and community support services for health and wellness.
- Keeping students and schools safe by developing a task force including parents, administrators, community-based intervention personnel and law enforcement, to collaborate on school safety strategies and tailor solutions to fit the needs of the individual school communities.
Hendy-Newbill reflected, “This race has been a great journey from being selected as Dr. George McKenna’s endorsed candidate. I never imagined the transition and am humbled and grateful for all the supportive members of the Board District 1 community. I am especially grateful for my immediate family; my husband, my two sons Isaiah and Immanuel, my sister Selma, and my Dorsey family that has stood by my side through it all.
“I am looking forward to representing the people. I am working daily to serve and represent this community as we complete the race to November 5th. I encourage the people to vote for me – a coach, a teacher, a mother, and a community member – for your next school board member of Board District 1!”
