The Los Angeles African American Women Political Action Committee (LAAAWPAC) will salute eight dynamic L.A.-area women at their inaugural awards gala. The theme is “Honoring Black Excellence.”
City prosecutors said in February that they had agreed to drop the case in six months if Melina Abdullah, a Cal State Los Angeles professor and Black Lives Matter organizer, adhered to guidelines aimed at preventing her from disrupting Los Angeles Police Commission meetings.

The murder of Nipsey Hussle is personal. It is personal to me. It is personal to a generation in looking at social media and news interviews, there was a clear message that his death was felt deeply and hurt immensely, and particularly for anyone who came into contact with him, no matter how brief the interaction.
This was clearly a predetermined game wherein the will of the community (who refused to elect Vela twice in his previous election bids and came out strongly for me), the endorsements of Black elected officials (like Assemblymember Kamlager-Dove and Senator Mitchell who endorsed Ms. Shaw and Councilmember Harris-Dawson who endorsed me), the support of students, faculty, and staff (who all participated in an interview process and unanimously supported Valerie and me), and the qualifications of candidates did not matter. Instead, the seven-member Board, which already had three Latino males, appointed a fourth…who has no background in public higher education or any experience related to the post. He was nominated by a right-wing Trump supporter (Ernie Moreno) and the rest of the Board voted unanimously in his favor.
L.A. College district has largest number of Black students in higher education in California but will not have any Blacks and only one woman on its governing Board of Trustees after 4th Latino male appointed.
Since the beginning of its inception, women have dedicated their lives to shaping and transforming America into the country we see today. This week, we kick-off the celebration of Women’s History Month by paying homage to a few women of color, who have rallied for change both locally and nationally.
Los Angeles Police Department Chief Charlie Beck has announced his retirement set for this spring and though mixed feelings surround the announcement, Beck said it has been an honor to serve.
