L.A. Black Worker Center Launches Citywide Survey to Demonstrate the Importance of Public Sector Jobs to the African American Community

For millions of Black families in the U.S., working in the public sector has long provided a dependable pathway to the middle class. Approximately one in five Black adults work in such fields as the government, teaching school, delivering mail, driving buses and working at hospitals. Blacks are about 30 percent more likely to have a public sector job than non-Hispanic Whites, and twice as likely as Hispanics.

U.S. VETS-Inglewood ‘HOOPS FOR HEROES’ Event

It will be an afternoon of family fun, food, entertainment and a competitive game of hoops! The event will feature local comedian, Alex Thomas, Jr. as host and a musical performance by rapper Mac 10.  Celebrity players scheduled to appear include: Casey Veggies, Dove Shack, Spice 1, Genesis, Sheldon Bailey and Coco Crisp, to name a few.

Congresswoman Maxine Waters Attends Behavioral Health Services Community Fair in Gardena

Congresswoman Maxine Waters (CA-43) joined Behavioral Health Services, Inc. (BHS) at the 7th Annual Art & Community Fair on Saturday, September 29 in Gardena. The event brought together hundreds of families from the 43rd Congressional District cities of Gardena, Hawthorne, Inglewood, Los Angeles, and Torrance for a day of health screenings, performances, and family-friendly activities.  

Southern California Edison Helps Build School Garden

Southern California Edison (SCE) volunteers and children recently gathered at Monroe Middle School in Inglewood to help the Social Justice Learning Institute (SJLI) build a school garden that teaches the connection between food science and the food people eat. SCE’s Networkers’ business resource group also presented a $5,000 grant from Edison International, the parent company of SCE, to SJLI for its work to help improve the lives of communities of color.

State Bill Streamlines Path For Clippers’ Move to Inglewood

Legislation that would streamline the state environmental review process for the proposed Los Angeles Clippers arena in Inglewood is on its way to Gov. Jerry Brown’s desk after winning unanimous approval from the state Senate and passing in the Assembly, 68-4.
