Ending Workforce Discrimination is Up to Us

During my tenure at the Conference of Minority Transportation Officials (COMTO), it became clear to me that access was the foundation of economic opportunity. The transportation sector lacked diversity, equity and inclusion, and this was glaringly obvious to both leadership and employees. Pathways began to emerge to grow a diverse pool of talent, but it was obvious that a more organizational framework was needed to operate at full capacity to best serve veterans, women, underrepresented, and underserved workers; groups that had been previously overlooked.

LADWP Commitment to Fostering Gender Equity Honored by Society of Women Engineers

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) was honored with two Society of Women Engineers (SWE) “WE Local” awards this month at the WE Local San Diego conference in San Diego, Calif. The Department received the Sustaining Benefactor award, while its LADWP-SWE chapter was selected for the Outstanding Professional Development Event award.

West Point Cadets Educate LAUSD Students

The United States Military Academy West Point cadets traveled to Los Angeles to host their annual Leadership and Ethics in STEM Workshop on Friday. The Diversity, Inclusion, and Equal Opportunity department at West Point partnered with LAUSD to host the event at Stephen M. White middle school.

Importance of Educators of Color for Black and Brown Students

This month, my organization, the National Alliance of Public Charter Schools released its highly-anticipated report, “Identity and Charter School Leadership: Profiles of Leaders of Color Building an Effective Staff” which examined the ways that school leaders of color’s experiences and perspectives influence how they build school culture, parent and community relationships, and effective staff.

NAMAD Honors James Farmer with Lifetime Achievement Award

“I can remember at a NAMAD banquet there were two tables, maybe three at a conference of minority dealers,” he said. “But I watched it grow to the level that it is today with many and, to be in a position within General Motors and to assist the industry and see it grow, has been gratifying,” he said.
