The Evolution of Bakewell Media’s Taste of Soul Festival

For 14 years, Los Angeles has enjoyed the annual Taste of Soul Family Food Festival on Crenshaw Blvd. The day-long festival presented by Bakewell Media boasts over 350,000 visitors just last year alone. Taste of Soul has become an institution in the Crenshaw community and draws people from L.A. and beyond, coming to enjoy live music and entertainment on more than five stages, delicious food from hundreds of vendors and shopping – including blocks and blocks of art, jewelry, clothing, beauty products as well as a plethora of free community services. The festival is family-friendly and known for being one of the largest and safest events in Southern California. Originally founded by Bakewell Media CEO Danny J. Bakewell, Sr. in 2005, Taste of Soul has grown exponentially over the years, and Mr. Bakewell says he can’t believe it’s been 14 years since its beginning.

Bass Leads Criminal Justice Reform Panel in Los Angeles

Congresswoman Karen Bass on July 13, led a group of panelists who are members of the House Judiciary Subcommittee on Crime in a hearing on criminal justice reform at the FAME Renaissance Center in Los Angeles. Hundreds of witnesses gathered at the center to hear about problems individuals face inside and outside the prison system and also to hear viable solutions. Special guests included John Harriel, a facilitator of reentry program, 2nd Call, Susan Burton, co-founder of A New Way of Life, and Stanley Bailey, who served 36 years in prison under California’s old Three Strikes law, all giving testimony about their experiences within the criminal justice system.

Trump to Freshmen Congresswomen: ‘Go Back to Your Country’

Earlier this week, one of Twitter’s most provocative and problematic users, the president himself, lashed out in tweets directed towards freshmen Democratic House members Ilhan Omar of Minnesota, Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez of New York, Rashida Tlaib of Michigan and Ayanna Pressley of Massachusetts — all women of color. Last week, the four congresswomen were involved in a group of Democrats who were condemning the conditions at the border detention facilities in the U.S. A week later, the president attacked.

Rep. Bass Responds To Trump’s Embargo Threat Against Cuba

Rep. Karen Bass (D-Calif.), Chair of the House Foreign Affairs Subcommittee on Africa, Global Health, Global Human Rights and International Organizations issued the following statement after President Trump threatened a “full and complete embargo, together with highest-level sanctions” against Cuba.

“In order for our country to fully take advantage of these opportunities, it is imperative that people with strong backgrounds relevant to the countries they will serve are appointed to be ambassadors, especially to sensitive countries such as South Africa, where less than 70 years ago, the United States refused to stand with the rest of the world in opposing the Apartheid regime established there. South Africa is a key strategic partner and a key ally on the continent and I look forward to continuing our work to build capacity there.”

Show of Solidarity in Aftermath of Hate 

In a moving and emphatic show of solidarity after the Tree of Life synagogue massacre in Pittsburgh, hundreds of people from across Los Angeles County gathered on Nov. 1, for an interfaith worship service at the First AME Church, and sang and prayed together for hope, healing, courage and perseverance. 

Black Women of Los Angeles Represent at this Year’s Congressional Black Caucus in Washington, D.C

The Congressional Black Caucus Foundation, Inc. (CBCF) recently held its 48thConference in Washington DC. For the first time in the foundation’s history, two senators — Senator Cory Booker (New Jersey) and Senator Kamala D. Harris (California) served as honorary co-chairs for the 48th Annual Legislative Conference (ALC). Historically, co-chairs have been members of the U.S. House of Representatives.
