Traveling across the country as well as abroad allows one to take in a variety of opinions and perspectives. Understanding different attitudes and points of view can help navigate the awkwardness of sensitive topics that I was curious to discuss. As I traveled through various parts of Italy and Greece recently, I had the opportunity to share my thoughts about forgiveness, humanity, hope, peace, love and happiness to a variety of people and what I found is that all of us have the same basic concerns.  One of those concerns pertains to the direction the world and mankind is headed in today’s political and global climate, but overall people still believe in humanity and that goodness will prevail.

Former Santa Monica mayor and longtime civic activist Nat Trivesis often sought after to speak at community events. Each year, Mr. Trives serves in a leadership role on community events celebratingthe work of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. His current affairs class at Santa Monica Emeritus College is one of the most popular courses in lifelong learningfor older adults. Mr. Trives is a former professor of Criminal Justice and Affirmative Action Officer at Cal State University Los Angeles.

Panelists for the event, where questions and comments were discussed regarding the Every Student Succeeds Act (ESSA), were Linda Langley Davis, the director of educational services for Hampton Roads, Inc.; Fred Smoot, a former Washington Redskins cornerback and motivational speaker; Rev. Dr. Kirk T. Houston, the founder and pastor of Gethsemane Community Fellowship Church; and Deidre Love, the executive director of the nonprofit Teens with a Purpose.

23rd Annual Central Avenue Jazz Festival

Each year, the Central Avenue Jazz Festival draws tens of thousands of people from across the U.S. In addition to live performances by world-class favorites and up-and-coming artists, the revered summer event includes pavilions focused on arts; Balfour Beatty Youth; GRoW @ Annenberg Health and Wellness; and business/employment services, as well as the participation of merchants and food vendors. Also the Central Avenue Historic Improvement District will host their 2nd Annual Jazz Festival Cultural Tour highlighting the legacy of Central Avenue.
