Prosecutors Against Gun Violence Co-Chairs to Congress: Address Dangerous Downloadable 3D Printed Guns Now

Los Angeles City Attorney Mike Feuer and Manhattan District Attorney Cyrus Vance, Jr., co-chairs of Prosecutors Against Gun Violence, today released the following joint statement urging Congress to take action to stop the proliferation of downloadable guns:

“The Trump Administration’s decision to grant a private company the ability to distribute downloadable, do-it-yourself 3D gun code online poses a highly disturbing threat to public safety. As time is of the essence, we call upon Congress to act immediately to overturn this grievous decision.

There is legislation to address downloadable guns waiting for action in Congress. Sen. Bill Nelson (D-FL) and Rep. Ted Deutch (D-FL-22) have introduced a bill (S. 3304/H.R. 6649) that would make it illegal for anyone to upload 3D-printable gun code. And Sen. Richard Blumenthal (D-CT) and Rep. David Cicilline (D-RI-1) have introduced legislation (S. 3300/H.R. 6643) to bar anyone from making a 3D-printed gun

If this administration refuses to act to keep untraceable, 3D-printed firearms out of the hands of people with dangerous histories, Congress must step up and enact commonsense legislation to do just that. The threat of 3D-printed guns to public safety and law enforcement is too great. We cannot stand idly by and allow untraceable and easily undetectable weapons to proliferate in our communities. Congress must act now.”
