Kaitlin Lewis is a junior scrum half of the View Park girls rugby team. Seeing the opportunities that her sister reaped from the program inspired her to join.
View Park high school recently became the National Winner of the Aspen Institute’s Reimagining School Sports in America Initiative, earning a $20,000 grant meant to help them pursue their athletic endeavors.
View Park alum and Grand Canyon University student Andrew Joseph Summerfield, 20, was recently shot and killed at Darby Park in Inglewood. Known for being an exceptional student and athlete, Summerfield was a recipient of the Obama Award for Excellence in Academics when he was in junior high school.
On April 3, the California Interscholastic Federation (CIF) announced that high school sports were canceled for the rest of the school year due to the COVID-19 pandemic. The order terminated all basketball state championship games. Spring sports like track and field, baseball, softball, boy’s tennis and boys’ volleyball were cut short. Senior student athletes face new challenges in the college recruitment process.

The Pan African Film Festival is the epicenter of Black cinematic storytelling every February. One of the films profiled was “Another Red, White, Black & Blue Odyssey,” a documentary on the ICEF View Park Rugby program.
Senior hitter Makenzie Carter is co-captain of the View Park girls’ volleyball team and senior class president. She has played on the varsity squad for all four years.
View Park Junior Haley Veazie is a multi-sport athlete, playing softball, volleyball, and basketball for the Knights. When she’s pursuing endeavors, Veazie strives to do the best that she can.
For the sixth consecutive year, the Carson Colts girls track team won the City Section title on Friday. The team scored 130 points, 76 more points than second place winner Granada Hills. The Palisades boys team snapped the Dorsey Don’s three-year Championship streak. Carson reigned over the sprinting events with junior Ryan Lacefield pacing the 200m and the 400m. The Colts finished the 4x100m in first place in 48.61s and came in second in the 4x400m in 4:03.23. “We just want to continue the legacy of our previous track stars and we want to be on top just like them,”
View Park sophomore Chima Uka enjoys a solid team effort, his involvement with the Knights football and track and field teams reflect that.
Monumental moments in the Sports world during 2018
Junior linebacker Cregg Matthews enjoyed his first season playing for the View Park Knights. He has been playing Varsity ball since he was a freshman at Verbum Dei; Matthews transferred to View Park as a sophomore.
After struggling against a tough non-Coliseum League schedule, the Dorsey Dons shut out the View Park Knights 49-0 in front of current students and alumni during their homecoming game.
Competing at the Varsity level can be rigorous, especially for a freshman. Sophomore guard Christian Johnson had to get his footing in Varsity quickly, during his first year in high school.
