
Former L.A. businessman Harry A. Gethers passed away on March 21 at the age of 100. For more than 40 years, he operated Gethers Enterprises, an interior decorating business with customers throughout the Southland.
A native of Bonneau, South Carolina, Mr. Gethers was born on October 31, 1924, to the Rev. Octavius and Mrs. Elouise Gethers. He was educated at Avery Normal Institute in Charleston and Allen University in Columbia. Next, he enlisted in the U.S. Army and U.S. Navy.
After serving his country in World War II and the Korean War, he relocated to California where he earned a degree in business administration. He was also a life member of Kappa Alpha Psi and a Prince Hall Mason.
Prior to retiring in the early 2000s, Mr. Gethers and his wife, Gail, operated his business as well as resided in the Crenshaw District of Los Angeles. His interior decorating service specialized in furniture upholstery, window treatments and carpeting for both commercial firms and residences among Hollywood’s elite. He also provided services to several churches in South Los Angeles.
After retiring, he returned to South Carolina where he ventured in real estate and was an active member of Mount Carmel AME Church until his passing. A celebration of his life was held March 24 at Mount Carmel AME.
