Stanford senior defensive end Thomas Booker has won accolades for his dedication to being an athlete as well as a student. He is a nominee for the William V. Campbell Trophy, which is awarded to a college football player with the best mix of academics, community service and football talent.
In the 2020 Tokyo Olympics, Team USA won 113 medals, including 39 gold medals. Many Black athletes contributed to the success of Team USA, some making history in the process.
After returning home from the Tokyo Olympics, sprinter Allyson Felix was welcomed by her daughter Camryn and the rest of her family. She had a meal worthy of a champion from the Harold & Belle’s Restaurant.
During the quarantine last year, several student athletes were looking for ways to train and stay in shape. Jayda Hamilton, a recent graduate from Serra High School, was willing to put in the work to battle the competitive Southern Section to compete for a state championship. Her father purchased a conglomeration of equipment to help Hamilton train.
Jeanette Bolden is a well-decorated Track and Field athlete and coach. The Olympian and UCLA star helped bring out the talents of the runners, allowing them to reach national and international stages. Bolden is also the third-generation owner of the 27th Street Bakery in Los Angeles.
With lightning-like quickness and a will to dominate, Sha’Carri Richardson is on her way to the Olympics in Tokyo. The 21-year-old native of Dallas, Texas, won the women’s 100-meter final during the U.S. Olympic Track and Field Trials. Richardson’s victory came in just 10.86 seconds – amazingly, it was an eye-lash slower than her head-spinning performance in the semifinal heat, where she crossed the finish line in just 10.64 seconds. Many are comparing the Olympic-bound track and field star to greats like Florence Griffith-Joyner, and Gail Devers. Markus and Mykale Mundy are helping the Dorsey Dons track and field team excel during the 2021 season. Both brothers are members of the 4×400 relay team.
Shelbi Schauble recently finished her first season with the UCLA Bruins track and field team. She competed in the triple jump for the Rafer Johnson/ Jackie Joyner-Kersee Invitational, getting 10.58m (34-8.50). Schauble noted she was feeling “a lot of emotions” during her Bruin debut.
Calabasas High School sprinter, Bella Witt, is the top hurdler in California and one of the best in the 2021 class. In December, Witt announced that she will be attending UNLV.
Cal State LA Hall of Famer Tommy “Tiny” Lister, who went on to a successful acting career that spanned more than two decades, passed away on Thursday. He was 62.
Jasmine Wilson, an eight-year-old sprinter and former Student Athlete of the Week, is pacing the 8U circuit in the AAU. Over the summer, she won three gold medals in the AAU West Coast Junior Olympics and two gold medals in the AAU Junior Olympics in Florida.
Although it was difficult, learning how to be a hurdler was something that Susie Fowler was committed to doing. She had been running track since she was nine but began to learn how to hurdle during her high school years.
View Park junior Deiarie Banks knows way more than just how to outrun her opponent. Being captain of the Knights’ track and field team, she learned how to boost the morale of her teammates while performing at a high level.
Dorsey senior Adam McKinney is a dual sport athlete, playing football at Santee and joining the Dorsey Dons in time for track season. Football toughened him up and gave him a competitive spark, which helped him in track and field.
