Every year the payday lending industry convenes in an effort to further expand and preserve the combined $8 billion-dollars in fees generated each year by consumers caught in that and car-title loans. Embracing My Imperfections Studying Abroad in London

Of the more than 330,000 U.S. students studying abroad, only 6.1 percent are African American and 10.1 percent are Latino. This is one in a series of articles by students of color who are breaking down barriers by studying abroad thanks to the Frederick Douglass Global Fellows program, which awards 10 full scholarships a year to students at Minority Serving Institutions. These students will periodically share their stories, hopefully inspiring others to apply. Join our social media campaign, #CIEEmpowered #MSInspirational #FrederickDouglassGlobalFellows, that is celebrating these extraordinary students, like Chinwendu L. Maduegbunam, a senior at Fayetteville State University, and their experiences studying abroad. Please view and share Chinwendu’s video story at http://bit.ly/ChinwenduMaduegbunam

WILMINGTON, N.C. (AP) — A slavery-themed game played at a North Carolina elementary school during Black History Month has prompted an investigation. News outlets report the New Hanover County Board of Education released a statement Monday saying that using a game to teach about slavery was inappropriate. A fourth-grade teacher had students at Codington Elementary play a role-playing game called “Escaping Slavery,” revolving around the Underground Railroad. According to WECT-TV , the game included a “Freedom Punch Card” that would send teams that had accrued too many penalties “back to the plantation to work as a slave.” The statement says the board

Wendy’s Window: ‘Civil Rights: Progression or Regression?’

I was born of a White mother and a Black father in 1961 in Southern California during a time when America was experiencing segregation across the nation.  Although many of us in California did not feel the same effects as many of our relatives in the South, segregation was still alive and well throughout the country. The Civil Rights Movement was in its beginning stages and the 50’s and 60’s were pivotal in changing the face and climate of America. The Civil Rights Movement was organized by African Americans with the goal to help end racial discrimination and provide equal rights to all under the law.

North Carolina Honors Former Slave Who Bought His Freedom

The state approved a historical marker for Lane, the sixth sign in Raleigh to honor a former slave. Sometime in June, said Ansley Wegner of the N.C. Highway Historical Marker Program, the man born property of Sherwood Haywood will be recognized on Edenton Street, just across the street from the Capitol where he sold pipes for 10 cents each.

Democrats Focus on Voting Rights Ahead of 2020 Primary

Multiple potential contenders for the Democratic presidential nomination are elevating the issue of voting rights as they prepare to launch campaigns. They’re vowing to oppose Republican-backed efforts to require identification to vote, reinstate protections eliminated by a 2013 Supreme Court ruling and frequently highlight the necessity of counting every vote.

California Moves 2020 Primary Up to March and Joins “Super Tuesday” Voting

Early voting in California’s primary will overlap with the traditional early nominating contests in Iowa, New Hampshire, Nevada and South Carolina. That could force the sprawling field of Democrats to navigate those states as well as California’s notoriously complex landscape, where campaigning is done through paid political ads.

The results of the race – which were initially projected in favor of Republican Mark Harris who had a 905-vote lead over Democrat Dan McCready — are under investigation after evidence of illegal activity by operatives associated with Mark Harris’ campaign was uncovered.

NAACP Strongly urges Senate Rejection of Farr Nomination

Even among dangerous Trump nominees, Farr stands out for his decades-long crusade to disenfranchise African Americans. He learned how to intimidate Black voters from segregationist Senator Jesse Helms and helped turn North Carolina into ground zero for voter suppression tactics. His nomination is a travesty. His confirmation would be heresy.
