The South Coast Air Quality Management District (South Coast AQMD) today issued a Notice of Violation (NOV) to the Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) for failure to properly maintain equipment at its Valley Generating Station (VGS) located in Sun Valley—a violation of its permit.

Low-income Los Angeles City residents who have been financially impacted through the loss of their job or who have otherwise experienced income loss in their household due to the COVID-19 pandemic are encouraged to apply for a one-time $500 grant to help pay their utility bills, under a program championed by LA City Council President Nury Martinez, Chair of the Ad-Hoc COVID-19 Recovery and Neighborhood Investment Committee and approved by the City Council last week.
Starting next Monday, low income residents can apply for the DWP Utilities CARES Grant. According to the LADWP official website, “Low-Income LA Residents Affected by COVID Pandemic Can Apply for $500 Grant between November 2 – 15, under Program Championed by Council President Nury Martinez and Approved by City Council & Board of Water & Power Commissioners” That took place on October 27.

The Los Angeles Department of Water and Power (LADWP) recently announced Google LLC as the 2020 Recycled Water Customer of Year for their ground-breaking use of recycled water at their Google Spruce Goose facility in Playa Vista.
`Extreme heat and electricity demand has caused outages in parts of Los Angeles, currently affecting some LADWP customers,” Mayor Eric Garcetti said on Twitter Tuesday night. “Crews are working hard to restore power as quickly as possible.”

As the situation around the coronavirus (COVID-19) continues to evolve, LADWP is actively prioritizing the health and safety of its customers, employees, and contractors. Until further notice, LADWP is suspending in-person public bid openings, the hand-delivery of bids, and in-person Pre-Bid meetings.
Attorney and public policy strategist Cynthia McClain-Hill was elected today as President of the Board of Water and Power Commissioners, and Commissioner Susana Reyes, a retired LADWP customer service director for low-income programs and sustainability advisor to Mayor Eric Garcetti, was elected the Board’s Vice President. McClain-Hill replaces former U.S. Congressman Mel Levine, who has served as Board President since 2013—the longest-running term of any Board of Water and Power Commission President. Mr. Levine nominated both for their respective positions, which were approved today by the Board.

Thursday, May 7, Mayor Eric Garcetti provided an update on COVID-19 Response efforts. The Mayor previous announced a 3-level analysis that will be in use, as Los Angeles gradually opens local businesses. The brick-and-mortars are still not allowed to let people come inside, but there is curb side assistance available for florists, car dealers, and stores that sell toys, books, clothing, sporting goods, and music. Community spaces that are looking to open by Saturday include trails and golf courses. Eric Garcetti provided updated data surrounding the COVID-19 outbreak, these numbers hold a deeper value, as they stand as major factors in deciding what future firms will open in L.A. The Los Angeles City Mayor shared the updates within the departments of Power and Water.
Customers who receive a disconnect notice should disregard the letter and not panic. While letters may still be sent out as our systems catch up with this emergency, the City will not shut off water or power to residents of Los Angeles during the local emergency.
