FAME Hosts Grand Opening of FLHI Health House

A new community service will be available to South L.A. residents though the First Ladies Health Initiative Health House. The new facility, located at 2249 South Hobart Boulevard in Los Angeles, will offer free health screenings, health clinics, healthy cooking classes and more on a monthly basis. The Health House will also be available for health-related speaking engagements and rentals. Scores of people attended the grand opening, tour and reception of the Health House on February 22. ‘How Sweet the Sound’ Reveals L.A.’s Role in Gospel Music History

A new exhibit reveals Black L.A.’s key role in the evolution of gospel music. “How Sweet the Sound: Gospel Music in Los Angeles” uses vintage photographs, video recordings and other memorabilia to tell how African American artists and churches created a global musical phenomenon. The multi-media presentation is at the California African American Museum in Exposition Park until August 26. The historical display charts the Black religious experience in Los Angeles from 1872 to the early 1970s. FAME Hosts L.A.’s BHM Worship Service

Mayor Eric Garcetti will head at a contingent of elected officials at the City of Los Angeles African American Heritage Month Worship Service hosted by First AME Church, 2270 S. Korean American and African American Leaders hold 4/29 Unity Event

Commemoration recognized 25th anniversary of 1992 L.A. Civil Unrest First AME Church of Los Angeles (FAME) and the Korean American Federation of Los Angeles (KAFLA) co-sponsored a 4/29 Unity Event on April 29 to commemorate the 25th anniversary of the city’s 1992 civil unrest. The program, held at FAME’s Allen House Gardens, featured unifying remarks from L.A.’s Black and Korean leaders that illustrated the vastly improved relationship between the African American and Korean American communities. First Ladies Health Day Marks Another Successful Event

Thirty churches in the Los Angeles area participated in the 6th Annual Walgreens-sponsored First Ladies Health Day on March 26. During the event, free health tests and medical screenings were provided for the entire family to address preventative illnesses, which disproportionately affect African Americans and Hispanics. Medical healthcare partners from Walgreens and more than 50 health organizations provided medical advice and counseling, as well as screenings for hypertension, HIV/AIDS, glucose, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and certain forms of cancer. In addition, participating churches received Certificates of Special Recognition from Congresswomen Maxine Waters and Karen Bass. The First Ladies Health Initiative (FLHI)

More than 40 colleges, universities, HBCUs, community colleges, vocational schools and academies, (including representatives from seven University of California campuses), are expected to participate in the “Hoops and Options College and Career Fair,” hosted by First AME Church of Los Angeles (FAME). FAME unites with CASA to help abused and neglected children

The Biddy Mason Foundation of First AME Church of Los Angeles has teamed up with the Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) to improve the lives of thousands of abused and neglected children in Los Angeles County foster care. The relationship, initiated by FAME member Samuel Herod, allows CASA to hold informational meetings on the well-known and centrally located campus. FAME’s location as well as its long history of social involvement, attracts many people in South Angeles to attend and learn more about CASA. Kirkland convenes 91st Annual Conference

More than 5,000 members of the African Methodist Episcopal Church will convene for the 91st Session of the Southern California Conference (SCC). The gathering takes place Sunday, October 19 through Sunday, October 25, at the Hilton Los Angeles Airport, 5711 W. Century Boulevard in Los Angeles. Following the conference, the Fifth District Planning Meeting will be held on Monday, October 26 to Tuesday, October 27. The Right Reverend Theodore Larry Kirkland, presiding prelate of the Fifth Episcopal District, will lead both sessions. Pastor J. Edgar Boyd and the members of First AME Church of Los Angeles will serve as hosts.
