Twelfth grade Dorsey High School student Kory Laflora knows he wants to obtain a chemical engineering degree and thinks he may want to attend a historically Black college. FAME Hosts #Votefest in Hopes of Registering 10,000 New Voters

First AME Church of Los Angeles is making a bold move to register 10,000 new voters by the mid-term election on Nov. 13.  The initiative, headed by FAME Pastor J. Edgar Boyd, is part of the African American Get – Out The Vote (AAGTV) campaign to increase voter registration by 10 percent. Photo of the Day: Bridget “Biddy” Mason Turns 200

  On August 15, Biddy Mason born a slave, overcame slavery and travel west to California. Mason became a nurse and midwife, using the skills she learned as a slave. Some patients gave her land in payment for delivering their children. She also saved her money and invested in downtown real estate, including buying the property at 311 Spring St. that would become her home. The Spring Street property was also where Mason and others established the First AME Church, the oldest African American church in the city. The initial meetings were held in Mason’s home. A 2016 reception at a private home for the Honorable Inonge Mutukwa Wina, the first female vice president of Zambia and member of the AME Church, resulted in a partnership to improve the living conditions for Zambian women and enriched the lives of members of First AME Church of Los Angeles (FAME) and friends, who recently visited the country. Foster Care Advocates at CASA LA, Carry Out Mission, But Need More Support

CASA started their first program in 1978 under the leadership of Judge Peter Giannini, who secured a four-year federal start-up grant. The program, then known as the Child Advocates Office, was under the guidance of Presiding Judge of Juvenile Court, Richard “Skip” Byrne and Supervising Judge Paul Boland. In 1983, Friends of Child Advocates, now CASA of Los Angeles, founded by Jacqueline Dolan, organized a public/private partnership to increase awareness and raise money for the recruitment, training and support of volunteer advocates for abused and neglected children under the care of the Dependency Court, according to the organization’s website.

First Ladies Health Initiative Sponsors Back to School Party

  Hundreds of people took advantage of services and resources offered at the Back to School Party sponsored by the First Ladies Health Initiative on July 28. The free event, held at the First Ladies Health House in South L.A., featured free vaccinations for children and free health screenings for adults. Also, 1,000 backpacks filled with school supplies were distributed to students. Several health partners and volunteers donated their time and expertise to provide screenings for diabetes, hypertension, heart disease, hepatitis, HIV/AIDS and various cancers. Local Churches Host Successful First Ladies Health Day

Thirty churches in the Los Angeles area participated in the Walgreens-sponsored First Ladies Health Day on April 8, where attendees received free health tests and medical screenings. During the event, free health tests and medical screenings were provided for the entire family to address preventative illnesses, which disproportionately affect African Americans and Hispanics. Medical healthcare partners from Walgreens and more than 50 health organizations provided medical advice and counseling, as well as screenings for hypertension, HIV/AIDS, glucose, diabetes, cardiovascular disease, obesity and certain forms of cancer.
