Chipotle Employee was Told, ‘Black Girls Always Have an Attitude’ Suit Alleges

Sheqweshu Clark, who is black, alleges that she was terminated in January 2016 for complaining that her Latino co-workers were given preferential treatment by management and that a supervisor told her after she spoke out that “black girls always have an attitude.” But Chipotle maintains Clark lost her job at the El Segundo store for allowing a worker to be on duty an entire shift while drunk, endangering both fellow employees as well as the public.

Inequality and Discrimination in Los Angeles County’s Department of Public Health

Recently, it was brought to my attention that two communities facing similar environmental stressors were treated very differently by the Los Angeles County Department of Public Health (DPH). In Maywood, the Southeast community suffered as a toxic magnesium explosion terrorized the neighborhood. In Porter Ranch, the suburban community was afflicted by a gas leak. Though both regions were exposed to extreme environmental hazards, the DPH gave significantly more attention to the latter community, creating a large disparity between the assistance each community was provided.

Public Offices Discriminate Against Black Americans

It’s an open secret that Black-sounding names can hinder employment, housing, and loan applications. Apparently, basic emails to public servants have snuck onto that list. So concluded a recent study published by the Institute for the Study of Labor, an international research center based in Germany. “Discrimination by providers of public services not only has a potentially detrimental impact on the economic and social lives of those affected, but is also illegal,” the study concluded. “While deregulation and globalization may have increased competition in the U.S. economy, thus placing pressure on discriminatory attitudes in the private sector … this has
