Jury Trials in L.A. County Canceled for Rest of March

“Effective Monday, March 16, 2020, there will be a suspension of all jury trials, both those currently in progress, as well as those pending commencement, through March 30th. This notification applies to jury trials only,” the memo reads, according to CNN, which cited Los Angeles Police Department spokesperson Josh Rubenstein as confirming its contents.

SMC to Transition All Classes to Remote Learning Environment

Santa Monica College (SMC) has announced that all classes—including those that generally require in-person instruction, wherever possible—will transition to a remote learning environment, effective Wednesday, March 18, to limit the potential transmission of COVID-19. There are currently no confirmed cases of the coronavirus at SMC.

SEIU California Applauds Governor’s Executive Order on School Funding During COVID-19 Closures

The Service Employees International Union (SEIU) California released the following statement from Max Arias, executive director of SEIU Local 99 and SEIU California executive board member, after Governor Newsom signed an executive order that will keep dollars flowing to schools closed due to the COVID-19 outbreak. The order means schools closed to protect communities’ health can safely safely serve meals, deliver online instruction, and support special education and other crucial student needs.

Comedy Store Suspends Performances; Laugh Factory Open, but Reduces Crowd Size

Census Bureau Creates Task Force to Ensure Coronavirus Doesn’t Disrupt Count

On Thursday, the bureau began sending out the first of several invitations to participate in the 2020 Census. Those invitations will continue to be delivered until March 20 and the Census Bureau is encouraging everyone to respond online upon receipt. Instructions are included, and provide the web address for the online questionnaire in English, as well as 12 additional languages, ensuring that more than 99% of U.S. households can respond in their preferred language.

AMC, Regal Theaters Reducing Seating Capacity Over Coronavirus

AMC Theatres and Regal Entertainment Group – the nation’s two largest movie theater chains — announced today that they are reducing their maximum capacity by at least 50% due to the coronavirus outbreak. Beginning Saturday and lasting through April 30, AMC will cap ticket sales for each of its theaters to an amount equal to 50% of the normal seating capacity. “With this action, we are facilitating the `social distance’ between guests who still want to see movies on a big screen,” said Adam Aron, CEO and president of AMC Theatres. The company added that they are enhancing their protocols
