A huge crowd witnessed history when Heather Hutt was appointed to represent the L.A.’s 10th Council District on Friday, Sept. 2. The Los Angeles City Council voted 10-2 for Hutt to serve as interim council member, making her the first woman and the first Black woman to hold the position.
Councilmembers Curren Price and Marqueece Harris-Dawson, the only African Americans on the L.A. City Council, supported the motion of Council President Nury Martinez to appoint Heather Hutt as the interim Councilmember representing the 10th District.
The Los Angeles City Council appointed Heather Hutt to serve as interim council member for the 10th District on Sept. 2, filling in for the suspended Mark Ridley-Thomas — and giving the South Los Angeles district a voting representative on the body for the first time in over a month. The appointment came after a week of deliberations in which consideration of her nomination was initially blocked by five council members concerned about the speed of the process. Hutt will fill the temporary vacancy unless the indicted Ridley-Thomas is acquitted or the charges against him in his federal corruption case
Despite the hundreds of Council District 10 constituents who showed up at the Los Angeles City Council Meeting on Aug. 30 wearing t-shirts with slogans like “Black Women Are Watching,” “Hutt is the Voice & Vote We Need, NOW!” and numerous other slogans, a hand full of councilmembers maneuvered to delay the vote to appoint Heather Hutt as the interim councilmember for CD 10.
Claiming to act in transparency, five members of Los Angeles City Council voted to delay the appointment of Heather Hutt as the temporary voting representative for Council District 10.
Heather Hutt was appointed today to represent Los Angeles’ 10th Council District. She will be the first woman to represent the 10th District and the first woman to represent South Los Angeles in a decade. The appointment was made as a motion introduced by Los Angeles City Council President Nury Martinez and seconded by Councilmembers Gil Cedillo, Paul Koretz, Mitch O’Farrell, and Kevin de León.
More than 400 people, including elected officials, union heads, leaders of several non-profit organizations in District 9, neighbors and other stakeholders, came out to the kickoff of L.A. City Councilmember Curren Price’s re-election campaign on April 2 at The Beehive in South Los Angeles.
Former Los Angeles City Council President Herb Wesson was cleared by a judge today to begin serving as a temporary replacement
for City Councilman Mark Ridley-Thomas, who was suspended from service following his indictment on federal corruption charges.
The Los Angeles City Council passed two motions on Feb. 22, as part of a legislative package introduced at the start of the year by Council President Nury Martinez aimed at “Breaking the Cycle of Poverty.”
