The Los Angeles City Council unanimously confirmed the appointment today of Deputy Chief Kristin Crowley to be the first woman to lead the Los Angeles Fire Department. The appointment is effective March 26, when Chief Ralph Terrazas is scheduled to retire.

The Los Angeles City Council unanimously approved a plan from the Civil + Human Rights and Equity Department (LA Civil Rights) to roll out the city’s first participatory budgeting pilot program. The Los Angeles Reforms for Equity and Public Acknowledgement of Institutional Racism, or LA REPAIR, will give nine communities impacted by high rates of poverty, COVID-19, pollution and other factors the decision-making power to allocate more than $8.5 million in city funds.

LA City Council OKs Changes to Proof-of-Vaccination Ordinance

The Los Angeles City Council today approved enforcement measures and modifications for its new law requiring Angelenos patronizing indoor restaurants, gyms, entertainment and recreational facilities, personal care establishments and some city buildings to show proof of full vaccination against COVID-19. The law went into effect on Monday, but enforcement is not set to begin until Nov. 29. The City Council on Friday tweaked the ordinance, so it will now require proof of vaccinations for only individuals who are 12 years old and over, instead of all eligible for a COVID-19 vaccine, which includes people over the age of 5. LA City Council Advances Draft Redistricting Map Ahead of Public Hearing

The Los Angeles City Council today advanced a draft map of proposed new borders for its 15 districts, ahead of the first of two state-required public hearings on the map tomorrow. Over the last week, council members made significant changes to a draft map originally recommended by a civilian redistricting commission. City Council President Nury Martinez had blasted that original map, saying the commission’s drastic changes to council districts “confused and alienated thousands.”
