LAPD Shootings Involving Mental Illness On The Rise

Police Chief Michel Moore said today that nearly a third of shootings by LAPD officers this year were in response to a person perceived to be mentally ill, up from about 21% at this point in 2020. Officers have opened fire 31 times so far in 2021, up from 24 at this point last year, Moore said. The four-year average for this time of year is just over 27 shootings by officers.

Nearly 3,000 LAPD Employees Seek Exemptions to Vaccine Mandate

Los Angeles Police Chief Michel Moore said today that the department will wait for instructions from city officials on how to interpret exemption requests for the city’s COVID-19 vaccine mandate, following a report that thousands of employees plan to pursue religious or medical
exemptions to the rule.“We have seen a number of our personnel who have filed for an intent to have an exemption, based on either medical or sincerely held religious belief,” Moore told the Los Angeles Police Commission. He added that “the department will wait for the city to provide instructions relative to the
interpretation and what will happen to those intentions to file.”

Becerra Restricts Access to LAPD Gang Records

California Attorney General Xavier Becerra has revoked access to CalGang records generated by the Los Angeles Police Department, following LAPD Chief Michel Moore’s decision to permanently withdraw from the program after an internal audit uncovered significant misuse of the gang-tracking database by LAPD personnel, the AG’s office said today.
