Compton Unified School District (CUSD) has teamed up with the William Morris Endeavor Foundation (WME) and Super Sprowtz to kick-off a new salad bar program in all 22 of its elementary schools. The District celebrated the official launch at Clinton Elementary School, Friday, September 4. The Super Sprowtz salad bar program began as a pilot program last year at Foster Elementary School.
It will now expand to 20 more Compton elementary schools to encourage over 10,000 students to choose healthier food options by providing nutritious vegetables via colorful salad bars featuring the Super Sprowtz characters. CUSD Board President said students’ academic success is connected to their health, and that it is the driving force behind its new salad bar program.
“At Compton Unified we understand that healthy students do better in the classroom. This program will enhance nutrition education and eating decisions made by our students. We think this program will not only keep our kids healthier, but more productive in school.”
Superintendent Darin Brawley said the District will continue looking for new partners that benefit the whole child by supporting their health and learning.
“These partnerships are part of how we have engineered the turnaround in Compton’s educational performance. Finding good, smart partners who help us educate our children inside and outside the classroom is a best practice and we will continue to accelerate that in the months and years to come.”
