New non-denominational ministry aims to equip God’s people to live in fullness of Christ
Promising a “spiritual life-changing experience,” the founders of Davar Christian Center are making plans to introduce a new ministry in Southern California.
The non-denominational church, organized by Pastors Wes and Cheyenne Owens, will hold their inaugural worship service on Sunday, October 14, at 3 p.m., at the Jewish Community Center, 3801 E. Willow St., in Long Beach. Beginning October 21, regular Sunday services will take place at 10 a.m., at the La Palma Community Center, 7821 Walker St., in La Palma.
“Davar Christian Center is a church for today, for this time, for all people and everyone is welcome. We endeavor to build the kingdom of God and to equip His people for the work of the ministry until the fullness of the stature of Christ Jesus,” said the pastors.
Joining the Owens on the spiritual leadership team will be Associate Pastors Arthur and Amanda Dyson, along with the young adult children of both couples. Mary Owens Williams, the mother of Wes and Amanda, is another key participant, as well as Mary’s daughter, Deborah Owens Collins, who will serve as administrator.
Even with all of the family support, unwavering faith and patience are also required to start a church. Fortunately, Dr. Wes has those qualities and more in abundance as demonstrated by his careful advance planning to prepare for the ministry’s launch.
“In January 2016, I had a burning desire in my heart to answer the call that God placed on my life and share the good news of the gospel of Jesus Christ,” said Dr. Wes. “I sought God for direction as to the name of the church and was led to the name Davar Christian Center. In Hebrew, Davar literally means to bring to life the spoken word.”
Last year, he and Pastor Cheyenne completed the incorporation of the church name and then asked the Dysons to be a part of his vision. The invitation persuaded Arthur to finally accept his call to the ministry and he was ordained this past April.
Although they are new to church leadership, the couples are experienced in ministry and godly service. The Owens were active members of Crenshaw Christian Center for more than 35 years and participated in a range of auxiliaries including leading the Highways and Byways street witnessing and evangelism teams and heading the nursery ministry.
“We have also served as helps ministry workers, personal ministry counselors and with the CCC Prison Ministry,” said Dr. Wes, who credits Apostle Frederick K.C. Price, CCC’s founder, as a major influence in his spiritual life along with the late Ester Mallot and Jimmy Crawford. Also, the Owens received a prayer blessing for Davar’s success from CCC Pastor Fred Price, Jr., on Sept. 30.
The Dysons, who worshipped the past 20+ years at Cottonwood Church in Los Alamitos, were highly involved in the church. Arthur, a keyboardist and bassist, was part of music and men’s ministries, while Amanda served in nursery ministries and with the praise dance ministry for nearly three decades. Cottonwood Pastor Bayless Conley was also extended a blessing for Davar Christian Center and offered to assist with the church’s launch.
In addition, the couples are educationally prepared to lead the new church. Dr. Wes, a graduate of Southern California Bible College in Norwalk, earned Doctorate of Divinity degree at EMIBU University in Bellflower. The co-founder, dean and instructor at Loving to Learn Bible University in Los Angeles, he also attended the CCC School of Ministry.
As for the Dysons, both were students at Cottonwood Leadership College and are currently enrolled in the Doctor of Ministry program at Next Dimension University in Rancho Cucamonga.
