Even though basketball season is over, the honors keep rolling in as El Camino College Compton Center men’s basketball sophomore guard Jayvon Brown was named the Rally Factory California Community College Athletic Association (CCCAA) Athlete of the Month for February. The honor is the first for an El Camino College Compton Center student-athlete since the CCCAA award program’s inception in 2005.
During the month of February, Brown averaged 17.9 points per game, shooting 43 percent from the field, 3.4 rebounds per game, 4.3 assists per game and 1.7 steals per game. He led the Tartars to a 6-1 month, leading off February with a career-best 33 points, including the go-ahead driving layup with two seconds remaining at Long Beach City College (Feb. 1) after scoring the final 8 points of the game for the Tartars. Brown dished a career-high 10 assists at El Camino College (Feb. 10), pulling down a career-high 8 boards, and he earned a career-high four steals at Los Angeles Southwest College (Feb. 15) in the team’s outright conference title clinching win.
Brown’s efforts during the 2016-17 campaign earned him 2017 South Coast Conference South Division Player of the Year honors. Additionally, he received an honorable mention nod for the CCCAA Athlete of the Month in January after averaging 16.5 points and 4.1 assists per game for the Tartars. Brown topped 20 points four times in January, and didn’t commit a single turnover in four others.
As an All-State First Team selection, Brown led the Tartars to their best season in the common era, with an 27-5 overall record, falling just shy of a state tournament berth. Finishing third in the final state poll, the ECC Compton Center men’s basketball team earned its first outright conference title since 2000, posting a 9-1 mark and boasting, at the time, the state’s longest winning streak of the season of 15 games.
Brown and the other seven Tartar men’s basketball sophomores are all slated to sign National Letters of Intent (NLI) during the NCAA signing period beginning Wednesday, April 12.
