In Huntington Beach, CA, the largest gathering of Black surfers in history was united again this year. A Great Day in The Stoke was established to create a safe space for Black surfers to connect.
Born in Louisville, Kentucky and raised in Fort Lauderdale, Florida, Naomi Hutchinson had a vibrant childhood where she was able to be creative and expressive.
“Outside of school, I spent my time dancing, cheerleading and hanging out with friends,” she recalled.
The third-grade students at Roberta T. Smith Elementary School had only a few days until summer vacation, and an hour until lunch, but there was no struggle to focus as they filed into the classroom. They were ready for one of their favorite parts of the day.
According to the Depression and Bipolar Support Alliance (DBSA), Black adults are 20% more likely to experience severe mental health issues. The 2016 National Healthcare Quality and Disparities Report stated, “Those who are from racial and ethnic minority groups are less likely to receive behavioral health services.”
Wellness Weekend 2024 will be held on Friday, May 17, and Saturday, May 18, at Crenshaw Yoga and Dance, located at 426 Crenshaw Blvd., in Los Angeles.
