Last football season was difficult for any fan of the USC Trojans or the UCLA Bruins. After two successful seasons, the Trojan hit a lull and finished with a middling 5-7 overall record. The Bruins struggled as they transitioned to Chip Kelly being at the helm, only securing three wins.

SoCal NOMA Prepares Young Students of Color to Break Barriers in the Architecture Industry

According to Reuben E. Jacobs, former events coordinator for NOMA’s southern California chapter (SoCal NOMA), it was about 12 years ago that the organization’s leaders decided that “they really needed to do something to bring the next generation into architecture and urban planning.” Thus was born Project Pipeline, a national initiative to introduce young people of color to the field. NOMA tasked its chapters across the country to organize camps with the purpose of educating youth on the basics of architecture.

Student Athlete of the Week: Kinsley Washington

“I don’t know why everyone is stressing, we are going to win this game,” UCLA sophomore Kinsley Washington continued to reassure her teammates during game two of the Women’s Softball World Series (WSWS). The Bruins were battling against the Oklahoma Sooners for the national title and had defeated them 16-3 in game one of the three-game series.  

Schetema Nealy Becomes First African American Female to Earn Ph.D. in Chem from UNLV

Raised in San Bernardino, California by a single mom, with four other children, there wasn’t anything extraordinary about Schetema Nealy’s childhood, at least on the surface. Because, one would have to be at least a bit extraordinary to accomplish what she did recently, becoming the first African American female to receive a Ph.D. in chemistry from the University of Nevada, Las Vegas. The Sentinel recently caught up with Nealy to talk about her accomplishment and how it came to be.

Lakers Hire Judy Seto as Director Oof Sports Performance

Seto most recently served as Director of Sports Performance for Select Physical Therapy, where she developed, designed and implemented sports science concepts and technology to maximize athletic performance, minimize injury risk and facilitate timely return to competition. Returning to the Lakers after serving as the team’s head physical therapist from 2011-16, she has previously worked in physical therapy roles with the Los Angeles Dodgers and Los Angeles-based HealthSouth and the Kerlan-Jobe Orthopaedic Clinic.

As a result, when Shabsis screamed for help when he suffered a broken hip in jail prior to the Jan. 1, 2014, mid-afternoon self-mutilation, he was left lying nude on his cell floor without the immediate aid he needed, Libman said.

Utah shocks UCLA 93-92 with 3-point buzzer beater

The UCLA Bruins held a 22-point lead and were in cruise control, clinging to snap a   three-game losing streak. In an instance, the unthinkable happen and Pauley Pavilion was at a loss for words when watching what had just taken place. Utah’s Parker Van Dyke buried a heavily contested NBA range 3-pointer at the buzzer to give the Utes it’s only lead of the game as the time expired. Van Dykes fifth three-point basket of the game capped a 23-9 run in the final 2:45 of play and Utah went on to steal a 93-92 victory over UCLA on Saturday.

Community Based Treatment, Not Jail Replacement: A New Plan of Care for LA County

In response to Federal investigations of the poor conditions within LA County Jails, and the increase of imprisoned people with mental illnesses which has now reached 70 percent of the jail population, Supervisors of LA County planned to vote February 12th on a new “Mental Health Jail,” formally known as the “Consolidated Correctional Treatment Facility,” instead of diverting people who shouldn’t be in jail in the first place.
