The Passing of Civil Rights Legend John Mack is a Deeply-Felt Loss to the Urban League Movement

While John’s service to the Urban League goes back more than half a century, his association with the leaders of the movement goes back even further. While he was studying for his Master of Social Work degree at Atlanta University (now Clark Atlanta), he became a protégé of Whitney M. Young, then Dean of the School of Social Work. Just a few short years later, Young would take the helm of the National Urban League and ask John to lead the affiliate in Flint, Michigan.

Prominent Civil Rights Leader John Mack Remembered

A prominent leader wherever he went, Mack was well known for his transformative work with the Los Angeles Urban League, which he revitalized and used to aid 100,000 people annually. He made a tremendous impact on the Los Angeles community and others around the nation. His legacy stretches from Washington, D.C. to Michigan, from Atlanta to North Carolina. Mack’s activism and dedication to improving the livelihood of others was mentioned throughout the service. 

Civil Rights Town Hall Focuses on Financial State of Black Angelenos

The town hall provided an opportunity to discuss relevant issues with a variety of experts and leaders. The event featured keynote speaker Valeisha Butterfield Jones of Google, as well as a panel discussion with Lori R. Gay, brand strategist, Sheila Coates, financial psychologist, Anita R. Johnson, AARP California’s associate state director for multicultural outreach, Jennifer L. Hopson and urban planning scholar Andre Comandon. NABJ – LA Vice President Jarrett Hill served as emcee and moderator.

BREAKING NEWS: Noted Attorney and Community Activist Michael Lawson Named Interim President of Los Angeles Urban League

The Los Angeles Urban League announced today that noted attorney and civic leader Michael Lawson has accepted the position as Interim President and CEO of the famed civil rights organizations Los Angeles Branch. Michael Lawson is not new to the Los Angeles Community and is well respected throughout both the business, political, philanthropic community here in Los Angeles and throughout the nation. Michael Lawson served as a partner at the international law firm Skadden, Arps, Slate, Meagher & Flori, LLP in their New York and Los Angeles offices until he retired in 2011.

A quiet and consistent pillar of the community, Harriett was a life member of Holman United Methodist Church and served with distinction as First Lady of the Los Angeles Urban League for 37 years.

Calif. For Energy Independence partners with the L.A. Urban League to promote STEM

Californians for Energy Independence and the Los Angeles Urban League have partnered on an educational program to encourage high school and college students to explore jobs in the energy industry. The program – “Careers in Energy” – focuses on the importance of STEM studies: science, technology, engineering and math. More than eighty-five local high school students attended the event and learned how excelling in STEM can lead to high paying jobs after college.

LA Urban League Hosts 2nd Annual TV & Entertainment Summit

The Los Angeles Urban League Young Professionals held its 2nd Annual TV & Entertainment Summit this past weekend at the New York Film Academy, Los Angeles and at the Writer’s Guild of America, West. The summit provided aspiring actors, writers, directors, producers, talent agents and more with the tools necessary to skillfully and confidently make their mark in the entertainment industry.
