Lauryn Hill Proves She is the Best Performer, Period

Musical superstar Lauryn Hill, and her nephew Daniel Bambaata Marley, graced the Greek Theater late in the evening on Monday, September 14 to a packed house. Her voice rang across the amphitheater, pushed by a live band and three backup singers.

Leaders vow ‘Peace in the Streets’

Community leaders came together for an emergency meeting and press conference at the Los Angeles Sentinel and L.A. Watts Times newspapers on September 2. The Safe Communities Initiatives Rally called the meeting, in response to an increase in gang violence and killings taking place in south Los Angeles and neighboring communities. The leaders, who came from communities like Crenshaw, Watts and East Los Angeles and who work with youth involved with gangs, gun violence and drugs, took charge of the conference.

Examining the Nicki Minaj Sculpture Incident

In the summer of 2014, revered artist Kara Walker unveiled her much-discussed piece “A Subtlety, or the Marvelous Sugar Baby.” The sculpture, a nude “Mammy” sugar statue in a provocative, sphinx-like pose, was mostly praised by critics. However, it was also subject to crude gestures and “selfies” from viewers.

He had been using his step-father’s name when he died. That’s why no one knew who he was. When Marquette Price passed away at the age of 42 on December 20, 1986, it took four days for the coroner’s office to positively identify him. “Positive” may not be the right choice of words.
Marquette Frye had been known as the young man who sparked the Watts Uprising on the evening of August 11, 1965, after being stopped by a police officer for suspicion of drunk driving. It was the infamy of that event that led Frye to use the name Price for the ensuing 20-plus years.

Aretha Franklin shows L.A. the real Queen of Soul

Sparkling dimmed stage lights and a roar of claps and screams filled the air when legendary singer Aretha Franklin entered the stage at her Aug. 2 Microsoft Theater concert. It’s easy to say that the Queen of Soul is a living legend with a timeless voice. Even at 73, her voice has remained as powerful as it was 50 years ago when she started her career.
