We get syrupy about “Hidden Figures” from all over and know little about the heroes and sheroes who grew up in our own back yard. Mrs. French L. Cowens was born French L. Jackson to Willie Mae and Willis Jackson in Gladewater, Texas. She grew up in old North Central Dallas.

Community Responds Overwhemingly to BHERC ‘Operation Love’ Union Rescue Mission Drive

The Black Hollywood Education and Resource Center (BHERC) continues to provide vital support to organizations that care for the homeless. Many that have been adversely impacted and expanded by the COVID-19 pandemic. In response to this growing need, BHERC held its second “Operation Love” drive for essential hygiene goods for the homeless residents of the Union Rescue Mission Sunday, May 3, 2020.

Gloria Walker Taylor, 50+ Years Member of Guidance Church, Passes Away

Gloria Walker Taylor, a lifelong Angeleno, passed away on December 1, 2019. A resident of Leimert Park, Gloria was a faithful member of Guidance Church of Religious Science for more than 50 years. Her viewing will be held on Thursday, Dec. 19, 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., and Friday, December 20, 8 a.m. to 6 p.m., at Angeles Funeral Home. Also on Friday at 7 p.m., Delta Sigma Theta will hold their Omega Omega Service in the Angelus chapel. Her celebration of life service will take place on Saturday, Dec. 21, at 10 a.m., at Founders Church, located at 3281

Compton Salute to Marie Hollis Attracts Hundreds

At a recognition program on Oct. 11, nearly 300 people came out salute her love and commitment to the city and celebrate her retirement as head of Concerned Citizens after 19 years of service. The crowd included elected officials, faith leaders, business executives and residents of the community.

Delta Magic Is Coming to Pasadena

Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., the largest sorority of Black women in the nation, will host its 51st Farwest Regional Conference in the “City of Roses” July 5-8 in Pasadena, California.
