Black-Owned News Outlets Will Run Gov. Newsom’s Quarterly Column ‘On the Record’

Starting this month, over a dozen California African American-owned-and-operated news outlets – including the Los Angles Sentinel, the Oakland Post, the San Diego Voice & Viewpoint, the Sacramento Observer, the Inland Valley’s Black Voice News and the San Francisco Sun Reporter – will publish in-print and online a quarterly column Gov. Gavin Newsom writes to inform Californians about important policy issues impacting them.

Governor Meets with African American Coalition at Gene Hale’s Office

On October 23, 2019, Governor Gavin Newsome met with the African American Empowerment Committee, a coalition of African American businesses and civic leaders from Northern and Southern California for a second time at the offices of Gene Hale, President of G&C Equipment Corporation and Chairman of the Greater Los Angeles African American Chamber of Commerce (GLAAACC) to discuss a range of issues impacting the African American community, including but not limited to criminal justice reform, homelessness, education, government appointments, and business process reforms for state agencies dealing with providing economic fairness to the African American community. The committee is chaired by Alice Huffman and Pastor Edgar Boyd. Gene Hale is the chair of the small business committee.

Governor Signs Bradford Bill on Insurance Diversity

Last week, Governor Gavin Newsom signed into law SB 534, authored by Senator Steven Bradford (D-Gardena). This bill expands current definitions in California’s Insurance Diversity Survey to include LGBT- and veteran-owned businesses. The bill also adds the Insurance Diversity Task Force and Governing Board Diversity Survey into California law ensuring valuable data will continue to be collected.
