For 14 years, Los Angeles has enjoyed the annual Taste of Soul Family Food Festival on Crenshaw Blvd. The day-long festival presented by Bakewell Media boasts over 350,000 visitors just last year alone. Taste of Soul has become an institution in the Crenshaw community and draws people from L.A. and beyond, coming to enjoy live music and entertainment on more than five stages, delicious food from hundreds of vendors and shopping – including blocks and blocks of art, jewelry, clothing, beauty products as well as a plethora of free community services. The festival is family-friendly and known for being one of the largest and safest events in Southern California. Originally founded by Bakewell Media CEO Danny J. Bakewell, Sr. in 2005, Taste of Soul has grown exponentially over the years, and Mr. Bakewell says he can’t believe it’s been 14 years since its beginning.
One of the leaders of the USC Trojan football team this year is senior defensive lineman Christian Rector. After the Trojan’s went 5-7 last season, he’s ready to better the program and qualify for a bowl game this year. “That’s why I came back, to change the narrative and flip the script and not leave on that note,” Rector said. He currently is on the Lott IMPACT Trophy watchlist, the trophy is given to a defensive player who shows athletic prowess and personal character. Track runner Mecca Muhammad of the Pacific Coast Shockwaves won big at the 2019 Junior Olympics in Sacramento. She earned three championship medals after coming in first place in the 800m, the 4x800m, and the 4x400m in the 11-12 division. The 800m was the biggest challenge for Muhammad, one of her competitors outran her once before.

Senior baseball player Elijah Dobson works hard to uphold the name of his school and his family through his acts. Dobson is a second-generation Dorsey student. His father is the head coach of the Dons baseball team.
