Mike Watanabe, the founding leader and president of the Asian American Drug Abuse Program, passed away on Friday, Nov. 3, leaving a profound and enduring legacy that impacted the greater Los Angeles community. According to a spokesperson, “Mike’s legacy extends beyond mere statistics. He nurtured AADAP into a place of healing and growth, a safe haven for those in need. Mike exemplified the values of advocating for what is right and serving the community unwaveringly.” A native of Pa’auilo, Hawaii, Mike was born on August 23, 1946. Richard Roundtree, Star of “Shaft,” Dies at 81

Richard Roundtree, the actor known and loved for his iconic portrayal of the first Black action hero, John Shaft, died on Tuesday at his Los Angeles home surrounded by his family. His longtime manager, Patrick McMinn, confirmed his death and said the cause was pancreatic cancer, a diagnosis Roundtree received two months ago. He was 81.

In Loving Memory of Alyce Joe Crump

Alyce Joe Crump passed away on August 25, closing out a lifetime of Christian service to the African Methodist Episcopal Church.  A fourth generation AME member, Alyce was also the proprietor of Vernon Escrow in Los Angeles for 40 years.

Celebration of Life Set for Ralph D. Sutton

Ralph D. Sutton, a L.A.-based public relations and marketing professional, passed away on Friday June 16.  Known as “the man with the golden voice,” Ralph had a memorable career as a radio broadcaster before finding success in the public relations field. He was a deejay on KGFJ-AM and KAGB-AM for many years. Life Celebration Set for Arlene Hayden-Mayo

Arlene Margaret Hayden-Mayo, affectionately known as Mema or Twin, passed May 29, becoming absent from her body to be present with the Lord (2 Corinthians 5:6-8).   The viewing will be held Wednesday, June 14, 2023 from 3pm to 5pm at Spalding Mortuary, 3045 South La Brea in Los Angeles.
