The Cali War women’s tackle football team aims to contend this year. The team has a family atmosphere along with the talent to dominate in the Women’s Football Alliance (WFA) Pro American Conference.

The WFA recently secured a broadcast agreement with the All Women’s Sports Network (AWSN). Fans can watch Cali War in their home opening game against Mile High on AWSN on May 10 at 5:00P.M. PDT. All home games this season will take place at St. Bernard High School.

Cali War has won the WFA Pro Pacific Regional Championship in 2019, 2021, 2022, and 2023. The team also houses the 2024 WFA American Conference Offensive Player of the Year Brianna Barrett.

Barrett, a former Women of Troy basketball player, led the WFA with 886 rushing yards, 11 rushing touchdowns and 26.1 yards per carry.

“When I play football, immediately I felt somewhat of a connection to it, like I did basketball,” Barrett said. “The combination of teammates that I had at the time and even now, the family that I built with this team, the feeling I get playing, the excitement, even though I’m paying for it, it’s still something I’ve fallen in love with.”

Cali War finished their 2024 season with a 5-1 overall record; nine players, including Barrett, defensive tackle Antoinette Borders-Frazier, and corner Sonfre Roberson, were named on the American First Team.

“When you’re able to walk on the field and know that you’re one of the top teams in the league, there’s a type of confidence, feeling of swag,” Borders-Frazier said. “It allows us to really show what we have, show our capabilities.”

Borders-Frazier is a player and the general manager of Cali War. She ensures that her teammates pay dues while competing alongside them. She sometimes has to shift from player to general manager during practices.

“We pay for our football fields, we pay for our practice fields, we pay for hotels,” Borders-Frazier said. “There’s a lot of things that each player, when they pay, they contribute to the team and our success.”

Cali War brings a consistent level of competition regardless of the score. A proud moment for Roberson was a time when the team hosted the Nevada Storm.

“We were down four touchdowns and we were able to come back out of halftime and turn around and win that game,” Roberson said. “Our mindset is that we were never out of it. We always have this fight in us, no matter what.”

Cali War head coach Jason Grant has held various coaching positions at several schools, including Crenshaw High School, Jefferson High School, and West L.A. College. Grant has been reminding Cali War of the importance of communication.

“The barriers that led to our losses were based on communication and our lack of preparation to be physically ready for our opportunity,” Grant said. “We’re putting ourselves in a position now to have multiple weapons because we’re communicating, we working out, getting in shape.”
