Parkside EDC will present an evening of the music of Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson on June 27 as part of its Jazz Cool Down series in Leimert Park. The series, held at LA Third Church, benefits college scholarships for students from Dorsey and Crenshaw High Schools and features LA jazz luminaries such as Barbara Morrison, Ernie Watts and Roy Gaines.
The concert, by Soul Passengers and Gospel singers Little Faith, will honor the legacies of Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson, who combined jazz and soul music with socially-conscious lyrics in a new art form that led to the development of rap and hip hop. Their works have been sampled and re-worked by contemporary artists such as Common, Kendrick Lamar, Flying Lotus and others. Musicians and vocalists for this event have performed with The Gerald Wilson Orchestra, Stevie Wonder, the Watts Prophets, Janet Jackson, Snoop Dogg, Robin Thicke and more.
