Peighton Mercier, the winner of the 3rd Annual Leimert Park Jazz Festival Art Competition, talked to the Sentinel about her work, which will be displayed at Leimert Park Jazz Festival on August 27, at the Baldwin Hills Crenshaw Plaza Mall.
Leimert Park Jazz Festival Executive Producer Diane Robertson, sat down with the L.A. Sentinel to pay homage to this community, which serves as the cultural heartbeat of Black Los Angeles.
Forever Sassy is the second evening of blackbox @ the edye, which transforms The Edye into a club featuring up-and-coming jazz and blues artists. The series is curated and hosted by The Reverend Shawn Amos; he and his house band perform at select shows during the season as well. The program benefits Jazz Musicians Against Cancer.
Parkside EDC will present an evening of the music of Gil Scott-Heron and Brian Jackson on June 27 as part of its Jazz Cool Down series in Leimert Park. The series, held at LA Third Church, benefits college scholarships for students from Dorsey and Crenshaw High Schools and features LA jazz luminaries such as Barbara Morrison, Ernie Watts and Roy Gaines.
Hopefully, people will leave, talking about jazz in their communities.”
