Phillips Temple Christian Methodist Episcopal (CME) Church, 971 E. 43rd Street, will celebrate 109 years in Los Angeles on Sunday, February 21. Morning worship will begin at 10:30 a.m. A special anniversary luncheon will follow.
Senior Bishop Lawrence L. Reddick III, presiding prelate of the Eighth Episcopal District of the CME Church, will be the guest preacher. His district encompasses the state of Texas and the island country of Jamaica.
The theme is “The Investment Factor: A Multigenerational Church reaching out to the Next Generation.” The scriptural emphasis is Joel 2: 16-17.
“For 109 years, Phillips Temple has been a beacon of light and hope in Los Angeles and this community,” said Pastor Bernard M. Jackson. ‘’As reflected in the theme, the day will celebrate our legacy of service as we build toward a future of expectancy.” The public is invited to attend.
Long known as “The People’s Church,” Phillips Temple continues to draw people to Jesus Christ by helping them discover God’s purpose for their lives and providing service to the community, Jackson noted.
Over the course of its 109-year history, 1907 to 2016, 17 pastors have served and three have been elected to the office of bishop in the C.M.E. Church.
“From humble beginnings in worship services in a downtown mortuary chapel, Phillips Temple today conducts services in a beautiful South Los Angeles edifice with a fellowship hall, educational building, library, kitchen, office space and a sanctuary that seats up to 1,200 parishioners,” said Pastor Jackson.
Numerous ministries and organizations work together to carry out the mission of the church, including Sunday School, cell groups and weekly Bible studies, state funded pre-school program, and feeding ministry.
