Service will include unveiling of the Gwen Ifill Black Heritage Stamp
Gardena Mayor Tasha Cerda and Gardena Postmaster Pam Smith-Cunningham will unveil the Gwen Ifill commemorative postage stamp during a gospel concert on Sunday, Feb. 16, at 4 p.m., at Hollypark United Methodist Church, 13000 S. Van Ness Ave. in Gardena.
The U.S. Postal Service issued the Black Heritage Forever stamp in memory of Ifill, an African American woman who broke gender and racial barriers and became a role model for journalists. She passed away from endometrial cancer in 2016 at the age of 61.
In addition to the Ifill stamp, the USPS will have the Gregory Hines, Marvin Gaye and other Black Heritage stamps on hand at the event.
Dozier Singers Family & Friends (DSF) will headline the concert singing their original compositions along with gospel selections and spirituals such as “Old Man River.” The Men of Hollypark, the Voices in Praise and the Hollypark Choir, directed by Richard Moorings, will also perform as well as spoken word artists reciting poems by African Americans.
Other program participants are members of the United Methodist Men of First Compton United Methodist Church, Cora Jackson-Fossett, L.A. Sentinel religion editor and staff writer; and Farron Dozier, founder and CEO of What’z da Count, an organization formed to inform and educate communities about the ravages of the sickle cell trait disease.
