The 10th Council District Women’s Steering Committee (WSC) plans its 34th Annual Scholarship Awards Luncheon on Saturday, June 29, 11 a.m. to 4 p.m., at the Proud Bird, 11022 Aviation Blvd. in Los Angeles. The theme, “Embracing and Inspiring the Future,” reflects WSC’s focus on education, women and diversity.

Congresswoman Karen Bass will be the keynote speaker as well as honored with the Lifetime Achievement Award for her outstanding political, public and community Services. Also, L.A. Council President and CD10 Councilmember Herb J. Wesson, Jr., will receive the Man of the Year Award and Metropolitan Water District Chair Gloria Gray will be recognized with the Outstanding Career Achievements Award.

In addition, Wyomia Tyus will be saluted with the Outstanding Achievements in the Field of Sports Award for her international and domestic accomplishments.  Tyus, a four-time Olympic Gold Medalist and lifetime WSC member, will sign copies of her new book, “Tigerbelle.”

“This promises to be one of the most outstanding luncheons that the 10thCouncil District WSC has hosted and the event includes a posthumous tribute to Aretha Franklin, the Queen of Soul, and a silent aunction,” said Jacqueline Nunn, WSC president.

“We will also honor five outstanding graduates of Dorsey, Crenshaw, L.A. High, L.A. Center for Enriched Studies, Fairfax, and Hamilton High Schools,” added Nunn.  “The scholarships are named for David S. Cunningham, Jr., the WSC founder; lifetime members Geneva Cox, Johnabel Gentry and Gladys Wesson, and our sponsors, the L.A. Department of Water and Power, Supervisor Mark Ridley-Thomas and US Bank.”

Elaine Gibbs and Nusoul will provide the entertainment and Cora Jackson-Fossett, L.A. Sentinel religion editor and staff writer, will be the emcee. The Rev. J. Edgar Boyd, pastor of First AME Church of Los Angeles, will be a special guest.
