Black Women for Wellness will hold their annual Reproductive Justice Conference on Monday, August 20, 2018 from 8:30am to 6:00pm at the Center for Healthy Families located on 1000 N. Alameda Street in Los Angeles.
The conference, now in its 15th year will feature activists, community members and health professionals seeking insights and knowledge to positively impact the health and well-being of Black women and girls. Power Forward, Forward Ever Backward Never Reproductive Justice Conference features topics on the centered with the intersection of social and reproductive justice issues. Pregnancy Justice, abortion, Fake News and Real Lives, liberation theology and religion as well as building collaborations for reproductive justice across silos are all on the agenda. Programs, policy and insights that influence the health and well-being of Black women and girls are central to this year’s theme, Power Forward Ever Backward Never, and it is of critical importance that women, health professionals, community activists and advocates cull together our collective energy and attention to these issues.
Black Women for Wellness members, staff, key volunteers and community stakeholders have curated this conference based on the lived experiences of Black women & girls. “2018 has been an important year with the current administration hacking the Affordable Care Act,” Janette Robinson-Flint, Executive Director shared, “Executive orders that create gag rules, defunding Title X and a negative United States Supreme Court case ruling that will allows crisis pregnancy clinics (fake clinics) to mislead and misdirect women and girls seeking reproductive health care services are major events, we are anxious to bring together health professionals, advocates, and activists for conversations that build our network and combine our social justice work.”
Black Women for Wellness began as a grassroots program that matched pregnant women with mentors who coached them from pregnancy until the child was one year old. Within four years, the Black Women for Wellness branched out to address systems and public policy for Black women and became a non-profit organization in 1997. Since then Sisters in Control Reproductive Justice program has expanded to include comprehensive sex education, policy, environmental justice and civic engagement.
