Established in January 2022, Make A Move L.A. is a nonprofit, centered around the arts, chess and community engagement initiatives.

“It all started with a chess tournament off Crenshaw and 43rd, to bring a divided South Central community together, grew into an impactful experience that would bring communities, cultures, and college campuses across the world together,” said Payne.

According to Payne, tournaments include a halftime show, DJ and their famous Wax King Pieces “You Lose, You Get Lit up!” Their events have always been hosted in unique environments such as restaurants, movie theaters, colleges, art centers, and more through collaborations.

Some of Make a Move L.A.’s previous collaborations include Councilman Andre Spicer of the City of Compton District 2, IPIC Theaters, Usher’s New Look in Atlanta, Hart House, Fresh and Meaty Burgers, The Tuck Room, Industry Jazz Cafe, South LA Cafe and Sip and Sonder just to name more than a few. Payne broke down some of the mechanics behind chess and what makes it different from other board games.

“What sets chess apart from other board games is the strategic, methodical, and problem-solving skills that comes with the game,” said Payne. “This same thinking method can be applied to life in various ways from entrepreneurship to personal goals.”
