Applications are currently being accepted from youth ages 15 thru 19 for the Bill Duke Youth Media Camp sponsored by the Duke Media Foundation. This prestigious and highly sought-after course, founded by Actor/Director Bill Duke, will only select sixteen young people to participate in its Fall session, which begins Saturday, October 7, 2017.
The New York Film Academy and the Duke Media Foundation began a partnership in 2016 that gives Duke’s students the opportunity to receive expert instruction from New York Film Academy instructors in the areas of filmmaking and media, and digital technology. In addition, all class sessions of the Duke Youth Media Camp are now held on the campus of the New York Film Academy in Burbank.
The Duke Youth Media Camp is a training and educational program that focuses on Media Technology and Financial Literacy. The Media Technology component teaches youth the trade and craft of media production including film production, screenwriting, producing, directing and editing. It also introduces them to the creation and design of cell phone applications, game applications, mobile television applications, and distribution portals e.g. Netflix, Hulu, Crackle, Amazon and YouTube. The Financial Literacy component teaches students the difference between the spending of money and the use of money, the definition of an endowment, an annuity, the Federal Reserve, credit, compound interest, investments, mutual funds, how to manage money, the importance of savings and checking accounts, and how to set up businesses so they can use and make money. Students final project is to produce two short films that will then serve as their demo reel for future employment in the industry.
The Fall Session begins Saturday, October 7, 2016, from 9 a.m. to 6 p.m., and continues each Saturday until January 6, 2018. A commitment from each student to attend every Saturday class for ten weeks is a must. Students applying must submit an online application and write a 2-3 paragraph essay on “Why I Should Be Chosen for the Bill Duke Youth Media Camp.” Applicants must also attend an interview with a parent or guardian and Duke Media Foundation staff.
