The 1989 Long Beach State 49ers women’s volleyball team proved that Black women could have success in the predominately White sport when they won the NCAA National Championship.
Senior Zoie Dupree plays volleyball for the Inglewood Sentinels. She also competed for the club team the South Central Starlings. Along with sharpening her techniques in the sport, she also learned key lessons in leadership. She was a captain and the head coach of her club volleyball team.
Dorsey junior Heaven Halibyton is a dual-sport athlete, competing in basketball and volleyball. She has been on the varsity teams of both sports for two years.
Sophomore Jadyn Harris is an outside hitter and opposite hitter for the Heritage Christian girls volleyball team. Harris noted how the team maintained great connections with each other on the court throughout the season.
Grad student middle blocker Kalyah Williams has made positive contributions to the USC women’s volleyball team. This is her first season with USC after spending her undergrad years competing for Washington State.
Since its inception in March 2020, Athletes Unlimited (AU) has provided female athletes the option to extend their pro careers in the United States through their innovative leagues. Former USC opposite Nikia Withers recently completed her first season with the AU Volleyball league.
Kaitlin Lewis is a junior scrum half of the View Park girls rugby team. Seeing the opportunities that her sister reaped from the program inspired her to join.
Jayli Nealy has been making the Irvine Valley women’s volleyball team a contending force. They go into the postseason with a 16-5 overall record and a 12-4 record in the Orange Empire Conference.
Initially, senior Dominique Allen intended to only play basketball for Los Angeles High School. During her years there, she decided to compete in track and field and volleyball and developed a fondness for them.
LACES senior Tyrah Lacy has never been afraid to speak up, she is a tenacious captain of the girls’ volleyball team and a learned leader at her high school. Since the age of 13, Lacy has been dedicated to playing volleyball and started as a middle blocker.
Senior hitter Makenzie Carter is co-captain of the View Park girls’ volleyball team and senior class president. She has played on the varsity squad for all four years.
This time of the year is hectic for Morningside senior Morgan Redford. While she is a member of the cheerleading squad, she competes on the school volleyball team. Later this month, basketball games will begin, and Redford will start her fourth varsity season with the Monarchs girls basketball team.
Junior Kimaya Lampkin is a dual-sport athlete and has become a leader of the View Park girl’s rugby team. A key lesson she learned in being a leader is to understand the perspective of every player on the team.
Although she is 11 years old, Arelle Middleton can keep up with competitors beyond her years. Her shooting ability made her an asset to the Rancho Halos. Middleton has Congenital Femoral Deficiency and is a multisport athlete in able-bodied and adaptive sports.
