Children’s World and KJLH Stage Return to 18th Annual Taste of Soul! 

On Saturday, October 21st, the annual Taste of Soul Festival will take over Crenshaw Boulevard yet again with a day full of fun, food, family, music, and much more. The free festival will take place from 10:00am – 7:00pm, from Crenshaw from Obama Boulevard to Stocker Street, with an anticipated attendance in the hundreds of thousands. Attendees will be able to indulge themselves with various food vendors, live music, black owned businesses and products, health testing and resources – just to name a few.  Sponsored by First 5 California and Lucas Museum, Children’s World will make its return to this year’s TOS and will feature a lineup of extremely talented youth and young adults.

A Plate of Hope: The Significance of Soul Food during the Holidays  

Thanksgiving, Christmas, Kwanzaa, and New Year’s wouldn’t be complete without soul food, a dish carrying hope and love for generations. The tradition of soul food begins with enslaved Africans; passing down the spirit of celebration amid their conditions, by creating dishes that brought joy into their household.  

NXT LVL Interns Level Up Taste of Soul! 

NXT LVL, a program powered by TecLeimert, offered their amazing expertise in showing off the 2022 Taste of Soul Family Festival.   NXT LVL is a free program that provides opportunities for under resourced youth to leverage existing affinities for social media and culture, as well as develop professional skills in the creative economy. In a twelve-week program, applicants learn the basics of digital marking and other tech-related subjects, and then are paired with an industry expert to mentor them.   Six interns worked with our Taste of Soul team for two weeks to ensure that the TOS (@tos_streetfestla) and LAS (@lasentinel)

Taste of Soul ’s Digital World Highlights Wellness and Education

At Taste of Soul’s dynamic, new Microsoft-sponsored Digital World this year, founders of the tech- and entertainment-centered non-profit TecLeimert recorded live podcasts that featured interviews with a host of thought leaders and industry experts, among them changemakers creating significant impacts in the critical areas of wellness and education.   One such panelist present on at the festival on October 15 was former record executive Shanti Das, an entrepreneur with an impactful story that led to the launch of the mental health nonprofit Silence the Shame. Taste of Soul Art Walk Shows the Talent of Local Artists 

  Along with providing great food, resources and entertainment, the Taste of Soul also displayed the creativity of six local artists through their Art Walk exhibit. L.A. Sentinel political cartoonist David G. Brown has a successful career, which included being the first political cartoonist for the Stockton State College newspaper and winning an NAACP Image award for his book “Barack, Race and the Media: Drawing my own Conclusions.” “It’s been a really great way for me to inspire the younger generation,” Brown said. “I am one of the few African American political cartoonists nationally that I do cartoons that represent
