SMC Volunteers Join in Coastal Cleanup Day at “Inkwell”

Santa Monica College (SMC) volunteers from the college’s Black Collegians, Adelante Club, President’s Ambassadors, and other programs partnered with the Black Surfers Collective, the Black Historians, local schools, and community members on Saturday, Sept. 15 to help clean up Santa Monica College’s adopted section of beach, known as the “Inkwell.”

Sandra Booker Forever Sassy: The Divine Music of Sarah Vaughan

Forever Sassy is the second evening of blackbox @ the edye, which transforms The Edye into a club featuring up-and-coming jazz and blues artists. The series is curated and hosted by The Reverend Shawn Amos; he and his house band perform at select shows during the season as well.   The program benefits Jazz Musicians Against Cancer.

Urban Youth Learn Surfing for Gabaldon Day

Several organizations united to celebrate the legacy of Nick Gabaldon during the first weekend of June at Bay Street Beach in Santa Monica. Gabaldon was the first known surfer of color, being of both African-American and Latino heritage.

Art from the Heart: Olympia Auset Sets Out to Beautify South LA

A once outdated burnt orange wall on the corner of 54th and Crenshaw received a heavenly glow when an eclectic Los Angeles native and Howard University graduate set out to beautify South Los Angeles. Olympic Auset, the Founder and Creator of The GOYS Life and the #LighttheLaunch campaign, knew she had a charge to rejuvenate her community, and decided that art was the perfect remedy to boost morale, reduce crime and alleviate lackluster aesthetics in the Crenshaw corridor.
