Los Angeles lost a giant in the faith with the passing of the Rev. Dr. Solomon L. Drake, pastor emeritus of Greater Ebenezer Missionary Baptist Church. Drake, who died on August 18 at the age of 90, was a spiritual father and mentor to scores of leading ministers. The congregation of Trinity Baptist Church honored Pastor Alvin Tunstill, Jr., and First Lady Dr. Sandra Mitchell-Tunstill on Sunday, April 25. The Tunstills were saluted for their 25 years of commitment, dedication, love and service as servants of God to the membership, their families and the community. Under their leadership, Trinity has remained a beacon of light and a pillar of service and love to the Jefferson Park and greater Los Angeles, said a spokesperson. In keeping with the season of giving, Trinity Baptist Church will present two community events to help people enjoy the holidays. The first program is a Christmas concert entitled, “O Holy Night,” set for Sunday, Dec. 15, at 3:30 p.m., in the edifice at 2040 W. Jefferson Blvd., in Los Angeles. Trinity Baptist Church will host a combined Thanksgiving Worship Service on Thursday, Nov. 28, at 10 a.m., on the campus at 2040 W. Jefferson Blvd., in Los Angeles. According to Pastor Alvin Tunstill, Jr., the participants are Pastor Perry Jones and Messiah Baptist Church, Pastor Curtis Munroe and Redeemer Baptist Church, and Bishop Alex Toussaint and St. Andrews Baptist Church. Marjorie C. Laws, a dedicated member of Trinity Baptist Church and longtime Sentinel contributing writer, passed away on Oct. 19. She was 86-years-old. Known for her strong faith and love of God, Marjorie was recognized throughout the L.A. area for contributing her time and talents to the betterment of her church and community. Her viewing will be held on Tuesday, Nov. 5, from 2 p.m. to 8 p.m., at Angelus Funeral Home, 3875 Crenshaw Blvd., in Los Angeles. For the 11th consecutive year, the Homeless Ministry of Trinity Baptist Church conducted a successful Blanket Drive to aid homeless men, women and children living on L.A.’s skid row. According to Pastor Alvin Tunstill, Jr., and homeless activist Brian Ferguson, Trinity congregants and community members donated more than 400 new blankets and pillows during the annual event held on Dec. 15.
