Concert honors the church’s 100th Anniversary Celebration

Pastor Alvin Tunstill, Jr. and the Trinity Baptist Church family welcome the community to enjoy the Inner City Youth Orchestra of Los Angeles (ICYOLA) at a free concert on Sunday, May 7, at 4 p.m., in honor of Trinity’s 100th Anniversary.

The concert, entitled “A Tribute to the Heavens,” will feature music devoted to outer space. Selections will include the opening fanfare to “Also Sprach Zarathustra” (also known as the opening to “2001: A Space Odyssey”) by Richard Strauss, “The Flying Theme” ” by John Williams from the movie “ET, movements from the “Planets” by Gustav Holst, and music from “Star Wars” by John Williams. The program will conclude with “Glory” written by John Legend and Common and made famous in the film, “Selma”.

ICYOLA is comprised of more than 100 members, ages 10 to 30, who reflect the variety of cultures in the urban communities of Los Angeles. Three of Trinity’s young adult members are in the orchestra – Amber Daughtry, Niara McCauley and Olivia Williams.

ICYOLA performs annually at the Walt Disney Concert Hall in downtown Los Angeles to packed audiences and previously at the Wilshire Ebell Theatre, the Getty Museum, the Samuel Oschin Pavilion – home of the Space Shuttle Endeavor, at the unveiling of the Martin Luther King, Jr. statue on the National Mall in Washington, DC, as well as at local churches throughout Southern California.

“The ICYOLA performances have included tributes to Stevie Wonder, Prince, Duke Ellington, Luther Vandross and many others. You will not want to miss this free centennial event,” said Tunstill.

“We also invite the public to share with us at our gala 100th Anniversary Banquet Friday, November 10, at 7 p.m., at the Hyatt Regency Los Angeles International Airport Hotel and our Thanks and Praise Worship Service on Sunday, November 12,” he noted, adding that ticket reservations for the banquet are required.

Trinity is located at 2040 W. Jefferson Blvd., in Los Angeles. To learn more about all of the 100th Anniversary events or obtain banquet tickets, call the church office at (323) 735-0044.
