Alexis G. Philius RN, is a bedside nurse who was motivated to make a difference in her community after observing a concerning amount of homeless people on her daily commutes to work. Los Angeles has the highest number of unhoused individuals with almost 42,000 people living on the street. Philius has dedicated the last 14 years of her professional life to helping individuals via the medical field but has now begun her journey as a community leader guiding, directing, and organizing volunteers to help balance out the disparities amongst the homeless.

The Children Youth and Family Collaborative (CYFC) will host its Annual Holiday Festival on Saturday, December 17, at noon, at Holman United Methodist Church. The annual holiday festival celebrates over 2,000 youth in foster and kinship care. This year’s event is a safe “drive-through party” where youth and families will pick up their gifts by car.

In March 2020, when college campuses across the country closed and sent students home, many HBCUs continued to house hundreds of students who did not have homes to return to. Groups of students were stuck on campus without the funds to pay for transportation back to their home cities. This challenge was a byproduct of several students losing the jobs they used to help fund their education, along with loss of family income. Many students became both food and housing insecure without the critical resources that HBCUs often provide.

Blake Griffin and the L.A. Clippers Foundation have partnered with non-profit Vision To Learn and the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) to provide free eye exams and glasses to every LAUSD student in need throughout the district. Out of over 600,000 LAUSD students, an estimated 15 to 20 percent need glasses. Over the next two years, every student K-12th grade in LAUSD who needs an eye exam and glasses will get them, free of charge, thanks to the generous support of the L.A. Clippers Foundation, Blake Griffin, and LAUSD.
