NAACP Joins National #Unityagainsthate Rally to Combat Increased Hate Attacks Against Asians Living And Born In America

Community Against Hate, a diverse coalition of community organizations and leaders have teamed up with the national civil rights organization NAACP in a clear stance to address hate directed toward Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders.  In a direct response to the increased verbal and physical attacks against Asians living and born in America, the #UnityAgainstHate rally will be held on Saturday, May 15, at 11 a.m., in multiple cities across the nation. The rally will echo the voices of many who have experienced hate crimes against them based on their race, nationality and identity.

Shirley Chisholm’s Historic Legacy Broke the Glass Ceiling for African American Women in Politics  

Today, African American women are leading the country as mayors, senators, congresswomen, state legislatures, and lawmakers. However it was Shirley Anita St. Hill Chisholm, who is known for breaking the glass ceiling for African American women in politics. This Black History Month, the Los Angeles Sentinel looks back on the life of Chisholm and her political leadership.   

The Criminalization of Poverty: Cash Bail for Non-Violent Misdemeanors Perpetuates Unequal Treatment Under the Law

Praise the Lord, indeed. Since the Voting Rights Act of 1965, Black voting rates – particularly in presidential years – rose steadily. In 2008, the Black voting rate matched the White rate for the first time and in 2012 exceeded it. Not coincidentally, in 2013 the Supreme Court gutted the Voting Rights Act and the Black voter turnout in 2016 dipped to a low not seen since 2004.

Newly Digitized Records Mark 98 Years of Women’s Suffrage Movement in California

This August marks 98 years since the 19th Amendment to the US Constitution was ratified and formally adopted, giving women the right to vote. To celebrate this anniversary, the California State Archives has launched a new digital compilation of records relating to the women’s suffrage movement in California. This is the first time that these records have been compiled into a publicly available digital compilation.
