Rubin said it was a no-brainer to support Betts doing this time. “We are thrilled to have Mookie Betts with us for a very long time. In memory of Mitchell’s late Mother, the founder of M.I.A., Brenda Marsh-Mitchell, they distribute their first 100 backpacks each year for the last 6 years to First AME Church for their foster care youth in honor of her passing and life of service.. “My Mother was the founder of Mother’s In Action, and she understood that children fail because they can’t hear, they can’t see, and don’t have the resources to have a successful school year. So she started this thing 22 years ago, said President Mitchell.”

LAUSD Parents, Students, and Teachers Protest for Police-Free Schools

Police are criminalizing students, says Director of Operations and Campaign Joseph Williams. “In LAUSD, Black students are only 8% of the student population, but they’ve been 25% and 30% of all contacts, citations, and arrests by L.A. school police. We know that Black student achievement has been one of the lowest rates on all of LAUSD.” Williams infers that LAUSD refuses to invest in Black student success, and instead, is investing in prioritizing the criminalization of Black students.

Johnson’s EquiTrust is providing critical financial support to underserved communities and businesses that have been traditionally neglected. These small and diverse businesses often have difficulty developing strong lending relationships with big banks. According to the Center for Responsible Lending, up to 90% of businesses owned by people of color have been, or will likely be, shut out of the PPP program.

Areas of misconception that created a snag in concise protection from the city’s police force, stems from the reasons they are called. “Over-policing” is tethered to overwhelming agendas that do not match the skill sets of law enforcement. Most escalations do not require the restraints or interrogation from the police, in most cases people who are from the neighborhood, who are familiar with those around them, can have a gentle approach to resolving minor confrontation or mental health related incidents.
