The Pacific Symphony will stream a free concert today in tribute to George Floyd, marking the one-year anniversary of his death at the hands of Minneapolis police.
Members of George Floyd’s family, and others who lost loved ones to police encounters, joined activists and citizens in Minneapolis on Sunday for a march that was one of several events planned nationwide to mark the one-year anniversary of Floyd’s death.
On Tuesday, May 10, Attorney Carl Douglas, and Black Lives Matter Los Angeles Co-founder Melina Abdullah joined 23-year-old filmmaker Jamal Shakir to announce a lawsuit against the City of Los Angeles and LAPD police officer, Eric Anderson. The premise of the case sounded like many others, law enforcement using overly aggressive force to manage a peaceful protest, but for Shakir, the order for his attack came directly from a family member.
“When I got the paper, I literally at one point said, ‘hot damn,’” says Phillip Goff, a behavioral scientist at Yale University who wrote a commentary on the study published in the same issue. “I was a skeptic about demographic reform previously, and now I am a convert.… Demographics reform in policing actually has the potential to dramatically change behavior.”
Just a few days have passed since Derek Chauvin’s conviction in the murder of George Floyd. But the images from that moment are seared in our memories forever: the murderer, led away in handcuffs.

Dr. Martin Luther King’s book titled, “Where Do We Go From Here” shares, “Whites, it must frankly be said, are not putting in a similar mass effort to reeducate themselves out of their racial ignorance.
But in spite of this coming together of these factors to yield this important victory, let’s not imagine it’s more than it is. It is a major victory, but a single victory.
